Wrong or mixed app icons with iPhone OS 3.0? Here might be a solution.

appiconsI have received scattered reports of a potential issue in the latest release of the iPhone and iPod touch operating system, version 3.0.

Readers reported that after their iPhone got stuck and they had to force a hard reset (keeping the Home and the Power button pressed simultaneously for a couple of seconds) some applications showed wrong icons on the Springboard/Home Screen (namely icons of other apps which are also installed).

Today I’ve experienced this issue myself, on an iPhone 3GS with a factory fresh OS 3.0.

Here’s what I did to resolve it:

  • Uninstalled the concerned apps.
  • Switched the device off.
  • Waited for some 10 minutes.
  • Switched the device back on.
  • Reinstalled the apps from the App Store directly via the iPhone (no iTunes, no Sync).

Hope this helps. Let me know in the comments!

Voxeo’s IMified now supports Twitter!

childcare_robotVoxeo, my favorite innovator in the customer self services space, today announced the addition of Twitter support to its IMified platform.

I’ve covered the announcement in much more detail over at The Next Web.

Essentially, extending automated customer self care scenarios that leverage Twitter, the communication phenomenon that caught millions of users and continues to grow at exponential rates, has become a giant step more simple today.

Utilizing your existing backend system integration and any scripting technology for dynamic web applications (PHP, ASP.NET, Python, Ruby etc.) you can now easily develop self services offerings that respond to AOL, MSN, Yahoo and Twitter messages. It’s like VoiceXML for Instant Messaging and Twitter.

Think about a Twitter account, that automatically responds to “DM @UnitedAirlines I want to fly from London to New York tomorrow morning”. The response contains a brief info about available flights and a direct link with a pre-filled form to speed up web based booking.

Self care right from your favorite desktop or smart phone Twitter client!

Think about monitoring the Twitter universe for all messages that contain “#fail” and are addressed to you as public @replies. Your bot can gracefully step in and deescalate before things go wrong big time.

Take your existing VoiceXML based Interactive Voice Response (IVR) application and hook it up to all major Instant Messaging networks and Twitter within days. Or leverage the VoiceObjects dialog application server (bought by Voxeo in December 2008) to deliver a sophisticated, personalized experience via these new and important customer communication channels.

My first weekend with the iPhone 3G S

iPhone3GSFor the small amount of readers, that have subscribed to my blog, but are not yet subscribed to the best European Technology blog, I’d like to highlight my coverage about my first weekend with the new iPhone 3G S – where “S” stands for “Speed”.

The short version: The iPhone 3G S simply rocks. In case you’ve been slightly disappointed by the “minor” changes Apple made to the very successful iPhone 3G, you might find the article inspiring.

When my iPhone 3G S arrived early Friday morning, I was expecting to be disappointed. To the contrary: I’m totally overwhelmed by the positive impact of this performance upgrade to almost every single aspect of my daily iPhone experience.

It’s awesome. It totally rocks. If you’re still contemplating whether to update or not, stop it. Go update right away. At the end of the day, it’s not about video, voice control or a neat compass. It’s speed that matters.

Impressive first release: TweetDeck for the iPhone

TweetDeckSmallYesterday was Twitter day – sort of. By the way: Why don’t you follow me @24z?

The service once more went down for a scheduled maintenance but as a compensation we got a couple of major updated Twitter clients: Sessmic DESKTOP, TweetDeck and TweetDeck for the iPhone.

I’ll cover the new iPhone release here and leave the desktop clients for somebody else. Whenever I refer to “TweetDeck” in this article, I mean the iPhone version. I explicitly point out if I refer to the desktop app.

In short: TweetDeck is a very impressive first release, however, I will continue to stay with Tweetie.

Downloading building43 videos

building-43Earlier this week Robert Scoble launched his much anticipated new site building43. Building43 aims at helping “traditional” businesses understand the impact of emerging Web technologies and the behavioral changes driven by these.

The web is growing so incredibly fast — it’s so dynamic and has so many new tools. Keeping up with the web and figuring out how to use it in a practical way for businesses is difficult. We see businesses struggling to understand and implement the latest social media tools and technology: “How do I use Twitter? How do I use Facebook? Do I need to develop an iPhone app? What technology am I not using that could help grow my business?” These questions are just the beginning, and that’s why building43 came to be.
Much of the technology blogosphere is focused on news — what’s the latest? That’s where many people spend their time.
At building43, we spend our time focusing on what those new developments mean to you. We go in-depth, and discuss the practical implications and the ways your business can apply the technology.
We’ve designed building43 to bring together thought leaders in a variety of disciplines and organizations, from entrepreneurs to those responsible for the latest technologies. They will share knowledge, experiences and advice on how you can use these cool new tools and apps to make your business more successful.

In case your Facebook FriendFeed application stopped posting to your Wall

fbff-logoOne of the applications I’m using over at Facebook is FriendFeed. Besides the ability to show your livestream in a profile box, it automatically cross posts FriendFeed content to your Facebook Wall, thus driving more traffic to your relevant content.

I’ve noticed that occasionally the FriendFeed application stopped working. Not entirely, but it stopped publishing FriendFeed posts to my Wall.

This is not officially documented but what did the trick for me is to explicitly  (re-) grant offline access to the FriendFeed application. In case you are experiencing similar issues, try doing the same by visiting this application setting page while being logged into Facebook.

Friendly reminder: Facebook Vanity URLs are now available!

facebookThose of you who follow Social Media news might be very well aware: From today onwards you can register your Facebook Vanity URL.

What does this mean?

It’s simple: For years to direct your friends to your Facebook profile you had to hand them a lengthy, non-speaking URL including your Profile ID. Most of the other popular social network services were already using speaking addresses. For example my FriendFeed is located at http://www.friendfeed.com/ralfrottmann.

Facebook Vanity URLs allow you to register a unique username for your profile. Mine is http://www.facebook.com/ralfrottmann. To claim yours now, just visit http://www.facebook.com/username.

Facebook has proactively taken some counter-measures to avoid the land-grabbing we all have seen with domain names (and nowadays Twitter names, too). Your Vanity URL name has to be at least five characters long. You have to be a Facebook member for a while. Newly registered Facebook accounts have to wait. In case you want to register a Vanity URL for a Page, that page needs to have at minimum 1000 fans.

Setting a username is a one-time only activity. You cannot change it. You cannot delete it. So be careful as your Facebook Vanity URL literally becomes a lifetime companion.

Google I/O: Building applications in the cloud

Now that Google made most of the Google I/O session videos available for online and offline viewing, I’d particularly want to recommend the “Building Applications in the Cloud” one:

GrandCentrix at medienforum.nrw

logo_mefoFor my German audience: I’ve been pretty silent with updates regarding my new venture, GrandCentrix.

I have to be for a few more days.

Those of you, who plan to attend the 21.medienforum.nrw (June 24th – 26h), you might want to mark your calendars for the first public GrandCentrix presentation delivered by our Chairman, Karl-Heinz Land.

As the medienforum is a pretty exclusive event, we feel honored for being invited and are very much looking forward meeting you there.
